Monday Macarons

Monday may mean the beginning of the work week for most, but today I am lucky to have a day off to enjoy the newly cooled weather, make a trip to the market for some organic milk & macarons, condo hunt online, and continue a re-reading of Two Solitudes (recommended for any Canadian).

Colour Coordination

Ok, as I mentioned in this older post, I'm a little OCD - my books are alphabetized, my mug handles all face the same direction in my cupboards, and my closet is organized by both garment type and colour.  Which is why when one of my friends was nice enough to forward me the cute video below on colour coordinated bookcase organization, she knew that I'd love it.  And while I still haven't braved tackling my own bookshelves (yes, because I'm not sure how I feel about disrupting the current alphabetical order), it did inspire me to organize all the miscellaneous images I still had left on my computer from New York Fashion Week.  I love scrolling up and down looking at the spectrum of the designs...and it reminds me of this issue of Vogue Paris that I was dying to get my hands on awhile back!

Well, it's been (much) more than a month since my last book post, but the latest novel I've ordered from the bookstore, one that I am very excited to get into, is John Green's Looking For Alaska.  Because who doesn't like coming of age stories set in the south, told in beautiful, lyrical prose?  The short excerpt that I have read reminds me of one of my favorite books, The Summer Fletcher Greel Loved Me, so I have high hopes from this one.  And honestly, once I read the above quote I knew I had to read the whole thing.

{Stieg Larsson's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo}

I love reading, as some of you may know from one of my early posts here, so it seemed like a logical step to start a monthly(ish) book club on the blog.  I think it's a good idea for two reasons: 1. It's always good to promote great novels, and 2. It will encourage me to look for good books and not let the busy, hectic, madness of life get in the way of a little downtime well-spent.  Up first: Stieg Larsson's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.  I got it for Christmas (it was on the wish list) and spent the final day of a horrendous trip to Rome holed up in my hotel room reading it from cover to cover.  It's the first in a 3-part series of crime thrillers set in Sweden and centering around themes of violence against women.  I wouldn't say that I'm usually a big thriller fan, but The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo has the same kind of addictive mass-appeal that had us all reading The Da Vinci Code a few years back.  It's smartly written without being tedious to read, which probably explains its dominance of best seller lists internationally.  Larsson's posthumous work also has two sequels The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest, which I am happily immersing myself in this afternoon. 

Things We Love

Kate Spade has put together a new book based on the popular "Things We Love" section on their website katespade.info.  Its premise is an inspiration board come to life, giving us a sneak peek into what gives the amazing creative team over at Kate Spade New York their inspiration for the bright, fun, charming designs they churn out season after season.  I love their colourful collection of favorite things, from glittering confetti and peonies, to vintage typewriters and zebras.  Unfortunately, the book is not yet being published for public sale - which hopefully changes, because it would make a perfect addition to any girl's coffee table or library.  In the meantime, we'll have to settle for the preview pages.

Photographer Ami Sioux had an amazing idea for a book.  She asked 50 people living in Reykjavik, Iceland to draw maps of their favorite places in the city, and then she followed the maps to find and photograph them.  Last year she did the same thing in her home base of Paris.  The results are Reykjavik 64º08N 21º54W and Paris 48º49N 2º29E, travel/photography books filled with the cities' hidden gems, capturing the places and experiences that have become significant to their inhabitants and serving as a sort of resident's guide.  The photographs are amazing, but what I really love is that she included all the hand-drawn maps that accompany them, each with its own personalized character and charm.
